UNIVERSITY HILLS ASSOCIATION OF HOMEOWNERS

Monthly Board Meeting

Tuesday, June 8, 2004

The meeting was called to order by president, Arnold Martin, at 7:40.

Board members present were:Arnold Martin, Esther Nachimson, Don McGee, Charles Schmidt, Paul Oldham and James Spriggs.  Resident attendees were Robin Beggs and Joe Philipp.  TLCA representative was Susan ------- Board members not present were Don Jensen, Jim Wells, Martin Kahn, Molly Kahn, Jim Underwood, Nell Anne Hunt, Mary Oberlin, Robin Filbeck, Linda Korkmas, Katherine Woodruff-Beggs, Craig Bowman, Christine Katib and Scott Glover.

The minutes from the last meeting, posted on the UHAOH web-site were passed out.  There were no changes.

Treasurer, Don Jensen, gave the treasurer’s report to Arnold Martin.  He said that UHAOH membership was at an all time high, 263 homes, but our real goal is to have 100% participation.  Ways to accomplish this were discussed by the board.

One of the ways discussed was to make a Welcome Basket for new residents with merchant gift certificates and a UHAOH member directory to be presented by the block captains.   Also discussed was a way we can get names of new residents from TLCA.  Because of the Privacy Act they will not give the names of the UH residents to the board of UHAOH.  Susan, from TLCA, said she would investigate a legal method we could be notified when a new neighbor comes to UH.  Esther Nachimson asked if the charter could be changed to make the dues mandatory like it was when the old UHHA was formed over 30 years ago.  We can not.

Charles Schmidt, City of Irving liaison, reported that enough signatures for a referendum on the sale of beer and wine in grocery stores had been collected.  A time in September would be the earliest we could expect to go to the polls.  Also being considered by the council are single member districts.

Charles said that Carl Road to Northgate is still torn up.  Arnold stated that he is concerned enough room on Northgate was not made for bicycle lanes for people going to The University of Dallas.

The signage on Rochelle/Riverside Drive has been changed.  It is not known if this change has been made of the Internet in sites like MapQuest.  All residents should be careful when giving direction to someone coming in from 635 via Valley View.

James Spriggs reported that there had been two Korean men murdered on McAnn, a street behind the Firehouse on MacArthur and Coker and that there had been barely a mention of it in the Dallas Morning News.  The story was carried by the Fort Worth Star Telegram.

James also cautioned everyone should consider getting 3rd party car insurance coverage because so many accidents are caused by uninsured drivers.

Everyone should be aware that the Las Colinas Patrol couldn’t intervene with a crime—they can only notify the police.  The Irving Police are the only ones who have jurisdiction in criminal activity.  TLCP is not authorized to enter a home.

Arnold Martin stated that he would invite Penny Hayter, the TLCP head of security to our July Meeting.

Joe Philipp said that he would talk to Heinz Simon, President of TLCA about the boundaries of the patrol.  Addresses are never given when a crime is committed—only the neighborhoods.  He said that everyone should be aware there is a black market in auto parts and accessories and that everyone should try to keep their vans and cars either parked in the garage or as far off the street as possible.

Paul Oldham asked that we supply him with a specific invoice to give to donors to our association for parties.

Training space has been made available at the Episcopal Church for safety training and to come up with plans to utilize and communicate information about crime in or near our homes.

The Irving Journal had pictures from the UHOAH Spring Fling.

The photo-opp for yard of the month was postponed until Thursday, June 9, 2004.  The Yard of the Month is located at 3708 Cabeza de Vaca.

Don McGee motioned for to adjourn the meeting at 8:38 A.M.   Charles Schmidt seconded the motion. The motion passed.

The next board meeting will be Tuesday, July 6, at 7:30 A.M.  in the grill at the Las Colinas Country Club.

Respectfully submitted,
