UNIVERSITY HILLS ASSOCIATION OF HOMEOWNERS
MINUTES OF REGULAR BOARD MEETING
June 11, 2002
The meeting was called to order by president, Arnold Martin, at 8:54 A.M.
Board members present were Arnold Martin, Esther Nachimson, Don Jensen, John Taylor, Charles Schmidt and James Spriggs. Chris represented TLCA. Not present were Don McGee, Frank Murphy, Scott Wilson, Martin Kahn, Molly Kahn, Jim Wilson and Nell Anne Hunt. Robin Filbeck was introduced as the new coordinator for the Block Captains.
Guest speakers from the Irving Department of Public Works were the director, Jack Angel and his assistant, Bob Chapman.
The minutes of the May 7, 2002 were approved as submitted.
The treasurer’s report was approved as submitted. UHAOH has total assets of $7,176.55. Two hundred and twenty two (222) households have paid dues. There are 91 new members. Forty-three (43) households have yet to renew their dues. The president emphasized how important it is for everyone to join UHAOH so our residents may enjoy all of the activities that the board has planned. It was suggested that we send out another reminder for residents to submit their dues.
Robin Filbeck stated the deadline for UHAOH to have a float in the July 4th parade in downtown Irving was June 17. Chris said that TLCA was going to have a float and perhaps we could have UHAOH participants walk with it.
There was a discussion of having a July 4th parade for the children in University Hills in the evening preceding the fireworks.
Mr. Angel and Mr. Chapman presented the board with the schematic of the proposed changes for the medians on Northgate Drive to facilitate an improved traffic flow from Rochelle to Story Road. Arnold Martin stated that he felt strongly that Northgate is a neighborhood street and no modifications should be made that did not honor that concept. The presentation was very thorough and all the charts and plans were left with the UHAOH board. Charles Schmidt is the repository.
Charles Schmidt and Esther Nachimson felt there was a real need to widen Northgate, going west from Leland to MacArthur, to three lanes so there would be a dedicated lane to turn north at MacArthur which would make access to the shopping center easier. One of the modifications proposed was to remove the planters at the MacArthur intersection. Esther Nachimson suggested, as the planters were esthetically desirable, instead of totally removing them to create planters at both sides of the street so they would not be an obstruction to large vehicles that were turning. This suggestion was well received by those present.
The plan, unfortunately, includes the removal of a number of mature trees which will be replaced with smaller trees or planter boxes. Unfortunately there is no way these trees can be saved.
Chris stated TLCA had met with Mr. Angel last week. Although the city owns the land, TLCA maintains the medians and provides the planting, mowing and irrigation. They will submit suggestions to the city in the near future.
Chris mentioned TLCA is concerned about the residences that still have old railroad ties as retaining walls. This is a safety matter as these are crumbling and rotting. They can collapse and cause damage to foundations and cause possible injury. Notices have been mailed to about 2 dozen homes to remedy this situation.
A suggestion was made for the UHAOH board to assemble a list of reliable repairmen and companies, who do a good job, to be posted on our website who would work with our residents at reasonable prices.
The next board meeting will be on the 2nd
Tuesday of July the 9th.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:33 A.M.
Respectfully submitted
Esther Nachimson, Secretary
