UNIVERSITY HILLS ASSOCIATION OF HOMEOWNERS

Minutes of Board Meeting

Tuesday, April 2, 2002

The meeting was called to order by president, Arnold Martin at 7:35 A.M.

Board members present were: Arnold Martin, Esther Nachimson, John Taylor, Don McGee, Don Jensen, Charles Schmidt, James Spriggs, Martin Kahn, Molly Kahn, Nell Anne Hunt, and Chris Wallace.  Not present were Frank Murphy, Jim Wells, and Scott Wilson.

Special guests present were: Angel Biasatti, Carl Vance, Dick Kirby, and Dottie Lane with AT&T; Joe Beal and Bob Curtis with Verizon; Bob Garcy with Southwestern Bell.

Each communication company presented the reasons University Hills does not have access to DSL lines.  AT&T was the only one who had anything to offer in the way of higher speed internet service and that was not very much for most of us.  The excuse they all gave was that our homes are too far from the switching station for the DSL lines (must be within 3000 feet) and they could not “afford” to put lines in because there was not a large enough market to bother with this.  After listening to all of their spiels, the bottom line is we’re not getting DSL in the near future.

President Martin expressed our thanks to our guests for their presentations and we proceeded with the business meeting of the board.

The minutes of the last meeting were passed out and approved.

Don Jensen passed out the treasurer’s report.  We have 184 paid members so far---we have 72 new members and 62 members who have not renewed their membership.  Don presented the budget for the present fiscal year.  We have total assets of $7,075.77. Don McGee motioned to accept the minutes and the treasurer’s report as presented.  Martin Kahn seconded the motion.  The motion passed unanimously.

John Taylor announced the new Director of the University Hills Neighborhood Watch would be Jim Underwood who lives on Cortez Court.  Jim is a chaplain for the Cedar Hill Police Department and is a business specialist in non-leniar strategy.  He will submit a plan to the Irving Police Department.

The Area Chiefs will hold training sessions for their block captains on 3 different dates: Area C, Linda Korkmas will hold her meeting at her home on April 16, at 7:30.    Area B, Mary Oberlin, will meet on Tuesday, April 23.  Area A, Beggs, will meet on Tuesday, April 30.

The newsletter in is progress.  We are in need of articles of interest for UH.

Charles Schmidt reported the project on Northgate was complete and they were working on the medians and central areas.

Chris Wallace of the TLCA reported that the TLCA Parks Foundation had received a grant to plant trees in Rochelle Park.  There will be a town Hall meeting at 6 PM at the Irving Arts Center, on April 6, to hear all of the candidates for the city election to be held the first Saturday in May.  If there are any questions about burglar alarms, we should call Penny Hader at 972-541-2345.

Nell Anne Hunt has planned April 21 as the day for our Flag kick-off to plan for the 4th of July.  We plan to put out 10,000 flags in UH for a really big event.  Invitations will be sent for a pot-luck affair at her home on Hidalgo.  Everyone is encouraged to come.

Our yearly SPRING FLING is planned for Saturday, May 4th.  Molly Kahn and her committee have great things planned for our families.  We will have a Cinco de Mayo theme and there will be games to play, a petting zoo, and pony rides.  TLCA is underwriting the petting zoo.  We are looking for underwriters for our other events that are costly.  We are also looking for a young band to provide music for the event.

The next board meeting will be on Tuesday, May 7th, at 7:30 AM.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:27 AM.

Respectfully submitted

Esther Nachimson, Secretary
